COIMBATORE: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued a set of guidelines to ensure the safety of students of technical institutions when they go on educational tours, field or industrial visits and excursions. They include insurance cover at the institution’s cost for every student and faculty member participating in such tours. Besides accident cover, it should have life cover. The guidelines also require the institutions’ heads to certify that the tour is required for the students or is related to their curriculum. In addition, the students should carry security ID cards with details of the parents or local guardians and their contact numbers. A separate data base of the personal details of the students should also be maintained.

The heads of institutions should also ensure prior permission for the tour. Written permission of one of the parents or the local guardian should be obtained in a specific format for each student. Also, all participating students should give an undertaking that they will abide by the rules and guidelines throughout the tour. They should also produce a medical fitness certificate. The accompanying faculty members should give an undertaking that they will take care of the students and ensure that they comply by the rules. They would be liable to disciplinary action if the safety of the students is compromised. The institutions may arrange training programmes on leadership and basic life support and first aid for the faculty members participating in such tours. If any institution under AICTE does not comply with the guidelines, the council will take action after ascertaining the facts, it said.- Courtesy  / AICTE Link (Safety of Students in and Outside of Technical Campus )
