Tuesday, August 11, 2015:  3M India, the Indian subsidiary of US multinational conglomerate 3M Co. revealed the innovation by Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology (RSET), Kochi as the winner of the second edition of CII – 3M Young Innovators Challenge Awards. The students of RSET- Libin Varghese and Joseph Mebin’s innovation of – I-Socket is an advanced intelligent low cost power saving socket meant for household usage. This innovation is aimed at solving the problem of loss of electricity from generation to reception. The students will be awarded a grant of two lakh rupees to create the prototype of their innovation.

3M India & Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), are proud to announce the winners of the ‘Young Innovators Challenge Award 2015’. Their positions are in random order and will be revealed at the 11th India Innovation Summit 2015, organized by CII on Aug 6, 2015 . The challenge was held as a run up to the 11th India Innovation Summit 2015 being held in Bangalore on the 6th and 7th August. The challenge witnessed an overwhelming response with over 170 applications submitted by innovators on some of the most inspired and clever innovations. Themed around productivity, sustainability and disruption with a social relevance, participants across India in the age of 18 – 30 came up suggested ideas capable of bringing about remarkable change in the world today. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Amit Laroya, Managing Director, 3M India said, “Innovation being in the DNA of 3M, we are constantly imbibing innovation and sustainability in the core of every solution that we offer as business. The 3M-CII Young Innovators Challenge is a great platform to encourage and mentor the youth of India to develop solutions to issues facing the country. We understand the capabilities and power that resides in the youth of the country and this initiative is a step further to give life to some extraordinary ideas. We are gratified to have received numerous entries with such innovative ideas in areas that need immediate attention.”

The 17 most powerful ideas shorted listed by a team of R&D specialists at 3M India were invited for a pitch session on 28th July. These entries were judged an eminent jury consisting of Ashwin Mahesh, social worker and scientist. Ashwin Naik, an Ashoka Fellow, and Founder and director of Vaatsalya Healthcare, an award winning social enterprise and Sukla Chandra, General Manager of GE Patent Analytics & GE Global Research operations, Bengaluru. The first runners up and second runners up prize were awarded to Sumit Murab and Shibu Chameettachal from IIT Delhi (Injectable silk-in-silk microsphere-hydrogel system for treatment of lower back pain) and Venkata Subramanyam G. and Nitish K Singh from IIT Madras (Energy from algae grown on waste water) respectively. They are being awarded grant prize of Rs.one lakh and Rs 75,000 respectively .  – http://3myounginnovatorschallenge.org/
