KOCHI: If you are looking for information on engineering education online in Kerala, make sure that you are directed to the correct website. Because, the over-excitement on the part of two state governments to honour former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam has resulted in two technical universities in the country being named after him. Kerala Technological University, Thiruvananthapuram, and Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow, have been renamed after Dr Kalam. “It is evident that both Uttar Pradesh and Kerala wanted to honour Dr Kalam, who passed away recently. But, two universities bearing the same name will create confusion among students and parents,” pointed out a teacher of a private engineering college. However, top officials at the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) said the name was unlikely to create confusion as ‘they would now be identified by their location/address’. “The AICTE’s permission is required to change the name of affiliated colleges. While the UGC grants permission to start universities, the All-India Council for Technical Education gives permission to start new colleges, hence the change in name. We have noticed the change in the name of the two universities. They would now be identified by their location/address,” AICTE chairman Anil D Saharsrabudhe told ‘Express’

The Kerala Technological University, which was renamed APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, came into existence in May 2014. The university aims at giving leadership to the technology-related policy formulation and engineering planning for the State. The varsity focuses on improving the standards of graduate, postgraduate and research programmes in engineering science, technology and management, as well as regulation of the colleges affiliated to it. All the engineering colleges in the State are affiliated to the university. The Uttar Pradesh Technical University – now Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University – was established in May 2000. With affiliation of approximately 800 colleges, it is claimed to be the largest technical university in Asia. The varsity is situated at the IET Lucknow campus.

Sole Difference

The only difference between the two universities is that the one in Kerala does not have the prefix ‘Dr’ in the former president’s name. – Courtesy
