KOLHAPUR: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has told colleges and universities to register on the National Institution Ranking Framework (NIRF) web portal at the earliest. The institutes are to provide the required data to get their rankings. UGC chairman Ved Prakash, in a letter to the vice-chancellors of all universities on November 22, had told all institutes to register themselves on the NIRF portal. The letter mentioned that the NIRF ranking would be made available from the next academic year (2016-17) for the students. The chairman has asked the authorities concerned to give this matter top priority. The NIRF has been introduced by the union ministry of human resource development to rank higher educational institutions in the country. The ministry has sought the participation of institutions under the jurisdiction of the UGC. The NIRF portal has been operational since Monday.
According to Prakash, the NIRF parameters are considered by parents and students when they decide on choosing an institute to pursue a programme. Since the NIRF for universities and colleges will evaluate on quantifiable parameters, all the colleges are required to participate in the exercise by registering themselves on the NIRF portal. The NIRF has proposed number of campus placements, opportunities of higher studies and entrepreneurship, claim over intellectual property rights and patents, facilities for sports and extra-curricular activities and representation of women among other key indicators, which will reflect in ranking engineering and management institutes. – Courtesy
