The Times of India | Ardhra Nair | TNN | December 27, 2015 |   Data prod to deemed varsities…

PUNE: The union government has directed the University Grants Commission (UGC) to instruct deemed universities across the country to provide data, such as the institute’s recognition status and student strength, to state governments on a regular basis.  Since deemed universities are under the direct jurisdiction of UGC, state education departments had no control over them making it difficult to acquire any information. The move comes after the Rajasthan government wrote to the union government with regards to its inability to provide a letter of authentication to students who want to go abroad for further studies or jobs since the deemed universities refused to share information. The letters of authen tication are essential when a student applies for higher education or employment in another country .

Appreciating the move, state joint director of higher education V R More said, “There is always a problem when it comes to getting any information from deemed universities as they claim to not come under the purview of the state’s higher education de partment. After sending many letters of request, a deemed university may provide the information but it is delayed in most cases.”   “Even getting information from state universities is hard.We have instructed all universities to appoint a nodal officer who will ensure that information sought is provided at the earliest. But the universities are yet to act upon the sugges tion. If the UGC is going to instruct the deemed universities to be forthcoming with information, then it is a very good move,” added More.  Vidya Yeravdekar, principal director of Symbiosis Society and vice chancellor of Symbiosis University , pointed out that since it is mandatory , almost all information about deemed universities is available on their official websites as of now. “Moreover, every year we fill up information on the All India Survey of Higher Education, which is a unified portal set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to collate all information regarding a university . Hence, when the data available on both portals, it will be better if the state government officials access the information from these two places,” Yeravdekar explained. – Courtesy   /     MHRD Updates : Authentication of the educational documents by the State Government for the purpose of Higher Education or empoyment abroad
