Now anyone can learn from professors from the IITs to the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Google has announced a partnership with the Ministry of HRD’s National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) project, in which some of the country’s best professors will be offering free online courses to anyone interested in learning. These courses are based on Google’s open-source online courses platform–Course Builder–with the aim of offering free, high-quality educational material to students, along with the ability to earn a certificate at the culmination of each course. Although, while the course itself is free there is a nominal fee involved in taking the examination. At this time there are 47 courses to choose from, encompassing fields such as Computer Science, Management, Social Sciences, Civil Engineering, Mathematics and Basic Sciences. These courses are being offered by faculty from renowned institutes including IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, Chennai Mathematical Institute and the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Modeled on the lines of a regular university course, these consist of video lectures, reading material, quizzes and assignments, and based on the length of the lecture material are available in three different durations: 10-hour, 20-hour and 40-hour. To answer students’ queries over the duration of the course, there are also online discussion forums available. The NPTEL online courses program has been active since January 2014 and over the last two years has offered over 90 online courses totalling close to 400,000 enrollments. If you’ve always had an academic bent and have been meaning to up your game on mathematics or aeronautics or computing, here’s a great resource to dig into. Visit the NPTEL site for more details on the courses and enrolment. – Courtesy   /   Google Course Builder :  Do you want to teach the world?
