Coimbatore: In a first of its kind, college students would be involved in a corporation project funded by the government and corporates. The civic body plans to rope in final year civil engineering students who would have to construct a household toilet within 72 hours.  The construction should be as per the specifications and design given by the corporation officials. The cost, area of construction, materials, training and documentation would be met by the Coimbatore municipal corporation, corporates and other volunteers. “Under the initiative, students should register themselves at toiletfirst.in, to take part in the ‘construct-a-thon’ that will be held for three days. It is a new initiative where a student will be given three days to construct household toilets. We plan to construct about 2,500 toilets within the three days,” said Suresh Bhandari, coordinator of Clean Cities Foundation.  “The government’s share of 8000 will be used to pay labourers, employed for construction. The funding from the corporates would be used to buy raw materials. We have requested ACC Cements to supply the initiative with cement, rather than set up toilets.  Other companies have also been requested to invest in purchase of raw material, to supplied to students at different spots in the city,” said A G Padmanabhan of Spice Foundation who is also an ambassador for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Senior corporation officials welcomed the initiative and called it a novel proposal. “The toilets need to be set up as per specifications and there should be no compromise on quality,” said a senior corporation official.

Volunteers said that more than 500 final year civil engineering students have already come forward and many colleges from neighbouring districts of Pollachi and Tirupur have also sent requests to take part in the construct-a-thon. “Several associations such as CREDAI and other experts would also be part of the campaign, they would help monitor and be in charge of quality control,” said an official.  Under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the government would pay 8000 and the rest would be funded by corporates and public donations. “The website would be open for donations from Wednesday (February 17). Even a donation of 10 would be accepted and there would be complete transparency in it’s allocation. The donation will be used specifically for the construction of household toilets under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” said an official. Corporation commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan said that the initiative will be launched once the entire work plan is in order. “The ambassadors will create a detailed report regarding raw materials, students, labourers, cost and other details, it’s only after that would the construction begin,” he said. – Courtesy   /
