In order to attract more international students, the premier institutes IITs will be holding their admission entrance test, JEE Advanced in the SAARC nations (Afghanistan, Nepal, Bangaladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan), Singapore, Ethopia and UAE for the first time next year. The institutes are taking a step forward in reaching out to foreign students both for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. During one of the meetings recently between HRD officials and External Affairs ministries, the above mentioned countries were finalized for holding the JEE Advanced test 2017 for foreign nationals.  A senior HRD official stated that the engineering exams have been conducted till date only for Indian nationals but this time around, the government plans to admit foreign students through JEE/GATE exams in 2017. The student selection would be done through a common entrance exam that would be checked by IIT with assistance from Indian missions in these countries. However, the number of seats will be additional in nature and will not be trimmed for Indian nationals at the 18 IITs. International students will need to shell out more as Indian students pay only a subsidized fee.
MEA would be giving the foreign students a research visa for the complete programme instead of just one year at a time.  Even though the exam will be conducted in 2017, the dissemination exercise will start from August 2016 and efforts would be made in all the eight countries to reach out to maximum people. IIT Mumbai will be preparing the necessary information material for this outreach. This would include test details, courses as well as frequently asked questions. Additionally, a web portal will be created for this purpose. The nodal agency on behalf of the External Affairs Ministry will be The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) for the tests.  It was the IIT-Madras Director who had made report on comprehensive system for attracting international students to the IITs. Once the report was made, Khakhar was told to prepare a detailed plan for conducting JEE and GATE exams abroad.  The government is taking these measures in order to bolster their international academic rankings. –  Courtesy
