CHENNAI: University Grants Commission (UGC) Vice Chairman H Devaraj on Wednesday suggested bringing the departments of History, Archaeology and Journalism under the umbrella of one school to offer a variety of learning experience to  students. Delivering his address at a conference titled ‘Socio -Cultural Transformation in the 20th Century, South India’ organised as part of the centenary year celebrations of the Department of Indian History at University of Madras, he said that such a move would also open the window for offering courses in the area of special studies, which may increase special educational assistance to students.

“If the concept is implemented, funds will released for this purpose and students will be asked to visit the location for analysing the culture and history of the place,” he said. The Department of Indian History, he said, is attempting to find the characters of our past and origin to record.  “To enrich the social science studies, the Calcutta University went on a campaign about historical analysis in a village. To maximize the importance of the history department, faculty should implement different methods to record and carry out research on Indian history to make it interesting,” he said.Former VC of Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli P Jagadeeshan and Prof Y Sudershan Rao Chairman of ICHR also spoke. –  Courtesy
