How often have you woken up in the middle of the night or in the wee hours drenched in sweat or shivering in cold as the fan was too fast or too slow to your comfort?  Five electrical and electronics engineering students of Government Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, Kerala, have developed an innovative device to squarely address this issue faced by majority of the people.  Friends and batch mates Kevin Jacob Chittinappilly, Akash Raju, Saffin Nazeer, Lakshmi Sreekumar and Vandana Menon have created what they call I-Fan (Intelligent Fan) regulator, as part of their end-of-semester project.

One need not dump old fans to turn them intelligent. All they have to do is replace the obsolete knob-like regulator with this new innovative device. The gadget comes with a 2.5cm-wide LCD screen that displays the current room temperature once switched on. It helps to set a desired room temperature. The device then detects the room temperature and increases or decreases the fan speed to maintain the pre-set temperature. “Not just that, if the desired temperature is achieved then the fan gets switched off automatically. It is always possible to switch back to the manual mode. We are planning to launch the product before this monsoon at a price of Rs.350,” said Mr. Jacob.
