The final wheel has been fitted at the rear part of the car, coming down like a jack to help move sideways in a semicircle.
Mumbai: A group of eight students from an engineering college in Hyderabad have built a concept car, as part of a final year college project, to curb parking issues faced by people living in metropolitans. The five-wheeled car, which can significantly ease parking issues, has been designed by a group of mechanical engineering students from Deccan College of Engineering and Technology, collectively known as Marsh (Muzaffar Ali, Abdul Azeem, Rafi Ahmed, Mohd Sohail, Khaja Habeeb Uddin , M.A Majid, Hyder Ali, Raoof Ahmed). It was completed under the guidance of Dr Md Azizuddin. They have named the retro-looking vehicle as the ‘5th Wheel car’. The final wheel has been fitted at the rear part of the car, coming down like a jack to help move sideways in a semicircle, which helps a driver to easily park or move a vehicle from a tight parking spot. 21-year-old Muzaffar Ali said, “The extra wheel or the fifth wheel that we have fitted in the rear side of this car moves like arc by fitting 2 pneumatic cylinders.”
On being asked if this technology can be implemented to cars on the road, he said that it can be implemented in cars, considering the troubles people face while parking cars, especially in metropolitans like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru. “The concept that we have designed can be implemented to any car; all that is required is a 1-inch pneumatic cylinder on the rear side of the vehicle,” said Ali. In a scenario where a car is stuck in between two vehicles, the mechanism can help seamlessly pull out the car from the cramped area. Utilising the ‘fifth wheel’ the vehicle can be turned 180-degrees, making garage parking easier as well. “With the new fifth wheel you can pull the vehicle in the small drive way from parallel parking, drop the fifth wheel spin the car 180 degrees and even an inexperienced driver can back the vehicle into garage with ease without denting a fender,” he added.
