Indore : The University Grants Commission (UGC) has come up with integrated MPhil-PhD programme, which will ensure admission of MPhil degree holders directly into doctoral degree programme.  With making some amendments in MPhil-PhD regulations-2009, the UGC recently notified the regulations making it mandatory for all universities to accept regulations with immediate effect.  As per the amended norms, the candidate would have to take common entrance test for PhD-MPhil programme.  “The candidate who scores 50 or above percent marks in the test will be eligible for the course work,” said Ganesh Kawadia, chairman of PhD cell of Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya.  He added that the candidates who would score 55 or above per cent of marks in the coursework exam would be admitted in PhD programme and the rest candidates will have to take admission in MPhil course.

Unlike previous years, the MPhil course will not be of one year duration but of six months.

After six months of studies, the MPhil pass out candidates can directly take admission in PhD programme. Neither they will have to appear in entrance test for PhD course again nor undergo coursework. The new integrated MPhil-PhD programme is student friendly. It would also restore the lost glory of MPhil degree which had become worthless after PhD was made must for all type of teaching jobs in institutions of higher learning.

What DAVV do next?

With the UGC notifying the regulations, the DAVV has started mulling on the procedure to adopt it. As the regulations are binding now, the DAVV is thinking whether it would have to seek permission of coordination committee – the apex body of higher education in the state, to officially amend its PhD-MPhil ordinance or not. The entrance test for MPhil-PhD programme is due in the university. The test would be conducted only after amending the ordinance as per new regulations. If the DAVV amended the ordinance at its own, the entrance test could be conducted in a month or two. And if left the decision on the coordination committee, the candidates may have to wait for three to four months for the test.

* Common entrance test will be held for MPhil-PhD programmes

*Candidates scoring 50 per cent marks or above will have to undergo six month course work

* Those scoring 55 or above percent of marks in course work

test will get admission in PhD course

*Remaining candidates will have to take admission in MPhil course

* Unlike previous years, MPhil course will be of six-month duration.  Courtesy
