IIT Kanpur – India’s leading engineering college is all set to get a dedicated medical college and a Centre for Engineering in Medicine soon. According to a media release, the premier technology institute will establish a medical college and the educational centre for medical studies near its campus.
Centre for Engineering in Medicine to start in October
The Centre for Engineering in Medicine Centre is all setup and ready to be launched in October 2019. The Centre will offer Masters and PhD level programmes in the field of medical engineering with nearly 50 seats. Similarly, the medical college which is to be set up as part of the institute will be a college cum specialty hospital that will offer Master’s level programmes to medical students. Students will be admitted to different programmes offered by Centre for Engineering in Medicine on the basis of the JEE Score and IIT JAM scores.
Proposal for Medical College Being Prepared
Commenting on the decision to setup medical college and centre for engineering in medicine, IIT Kanpur Director Abhay Karandikar said that a detailed project report has been prepared by the institute in collaboration with Tata Trusts. The report is expected to be completed in next two months which will be followed by a submission of proposal with the HRD Ministry for approval. The official announcement regarding the details about the medical college will be made public thereafter. The proposal seeks to set up a 500 bed capacity super specialty hospital on a land of 20 acres. The hospital will be setup at a cost of around Rs 800 crores and will feature state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure and facilities.
At first, the medical college will offer postgraduate level programmes such as MD, MS (PG) levels. However, the institute is also thinking about introducing MBBS programme in future. If the proposal is accepted b MHRD, IIT Kanpur will be the first IIT and first Engineering College in India to have a medical college under its aegis.
Increase in Integrate Programmes for Engineering & Medicine
In the last few year, the overall demand for integrated programmes which bring together Engineering and Medicine fields. So far, IIT-Delhi, IIT-BHU and IIT-Gandhinagar have setup independent and dedicated centres for biology-related studies. On similar lines, GATE 2020 Entrance Exam has also introduced a new subject of Biomedical Engineering (BM) as part of the screening test from this year onwards. – Courtesy
