COIMBATORE: A majority of the technical education institutions in the country have performed poorly in industry links, says a survey done by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). According to the survey, 90 percent of engineering colleges more than 10 years old have scored fewer than 35 marks out of 100( governance:7 marks, curriculum: 17 marks, faculty: 29 marks, infrastructure: 10 marks, service, project and skill development: 18 marks and placement: 19 marks). In the case of emerging engineering colleges, which are up to five years old, the situation is worse. The survey was being done for the fourth year now, and best industry-linked-institute awards in 24 categories are going to be announced on December 2. The findings of the survey were released on Thursday. In the established institutions category, only 9 per cent institutes in computer science and IT engineering, 8 per cent in civil engineering, 12 per cent in chemical engineering, 9 per cent in electrical engineering, 5 percent in electronics and communication engineering, 12 per cent in mechanical engineering have managed to score more than 35 marks. In the emerging engineering institutions category, the percentage was lower.

In the case of established management institutes, 27 per cent of institutes have managed to score more than 35 marks while 54 per cent institutes scored between 10 and 35. Reacting to the survey findings, AICTE Chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe said, “The very purpose of instituting the AICTE-CII awards was to overcome the challenge of not doing well in this important aspect of technical education by most colleges.Change is required in all facets.” This includes involving members from industry on the boards of management; framing state-of-the-art curricula relevant to industry and society; involving industry personnel in boards of studies, senate and academic councils; inviting persons from industry as adjunct faculty and sending faculty to industry on sabbaticals; getting CSR funding for improving infrastructure, interaction between students and industry representatives and providing industry internships, among others, he said, adding these were achievable only through constant engagement with industry. –  Courtesy

17 technical institutes win awards in AICTE-CII survey : Fourth edition: HT Education Correspondent, Hindustan Times  |  December 17, 2015

A total of 17 technical institutes from across India managed to bag majority of the awards in this year’s AICTE-CII Survey of Industry-Linked Technical Institutes which included ten awards in degree category and six in diploma category. In degree category, there were eight awards in engineering and one each in pharmaceutical and architecture categories. The engineering awards included one award for best National Institute of Technology (NIT) which was won by NIT Trichy. There was one award in the emerging category in engineering which went to Chennai-based Vel Tech Multi Tech Dr.Rangarajan Dr.Sakunthala Engineering College.  The award for best industry-linked management institute was won by Mumbai-based Prin LN Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research while there was no winner in the emerging category of management. In engineering, the other winners were DKTE Society’s Textile and Engineering Institute, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Sona College of Technology, RMK Engineering College and Sri Sai Ram Engineering College.

The award in the pharma category was won by SVKM’s Dr Bhanuben Nanavati College of Pharmacy. Vijay Thadani, Chairman, CII National Committee on Higher Education said, “The survey’s initiative to map the industry linkages of technical institutes has grown in participation every year. By providing an opportunity to institutions to meticulously document their industry linkages, and substantiate the information with evidence, it has brought in an environment of authenticity and veracity into the exercise, which greatly benefits the institutions involved.” Commenting on the survey, AICTE Chairman, Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe said, “The survey of industry linkages of technical institutions is a good way of recognising and rewarding institutes for their good work with industry. For education to be meaningful, it should be in sync with what the industry requires. Since this survey brings industry experts at every step of the evaluation process, the validation that it provides to institutes is valued by them.”

The best performing institutes were selected after a five-and-half month long online survey and a subsequent four-month jury process. More than 60 experts from industry and academia took part in the jury process which included visits to institutes for on-site assessment of industry linkages of institutes. The fourth edition of the survey saw the number of participating institutes increase from 814 in 2014 to 901. This number was 355 in 2013 and 156 in 2012. The discipline-wise submissions rose from 2744 in 2014 to more than 3000 this year. This count was 1124 in 2013. As many as 21 awards were bagged by 17 technical institutes from across the country in the fourth edition of the annual AICTE-CII Survey of Industry-Linked Technical Institutes.
