GECA Engineering students devise hi-tech combat helmet for soldiers and fire-fighters

Aurangabad: A group of students from the Government Engineering College here has designed and developed a combat helmet that may enable soldiers to perform their job with enhanced speed and efficiency.  The helmet aims at providing soldiers with a set of functions that require fewest possible actions on their part while being on the battle field.  “Nowadays, technologies like improved reality systems, sensing systems and communication systems, are emerging fast. The integration of these systems with electronic devices can improve the responses and efficiency in general of soldiers during armed conflict. We have devised the combat helmet on these lines,” said Saakshi Jain, a final year student of electronics, who is part of the project.

Elaborating on the working principle of the helmet, she said, “A ‘heads-up’ display similar to Google glass can be flipped down in front of a soldier’s eyeball to give him or her the mission status updates, battlefield maps and GPS locations of squadron leaders and targets among other details. Rather than looking down at the conventional map or chest-worn computer, the soldier sees virtual icons.”  Final year (electronics) student duo of Vedant Saswade and Abhijeet Berad are also part of the project, which has been recently adjudged as one of the top projects from the Government Engineering College, Aurangabad by a renowned IT company. Listing the advantages of the combat helmet devised by them, the students said it was light weight, cost-effective and can be used during both day and night operations.  Besides use for soldiers, the helmet can be also used by fire-fighters among other possible applications, it was said. –  Courtesy
