The Indian Express |  Express Web Desk | November 14, 2016 |

In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellors of all universities, UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu said that NCC is to be offered as an elective subject for the benefit of the students.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a new notification stating that all universities are to offer NCC as an optional subject to students. In a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellors of all the universities, UGC secretary Jaspal S Sandhu has said that NCC is to be offered as an elective subject for the benefit of the students. The letter is in reference to earlier guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Recourse Development (MHRD) on August 23, 2016, stating a Ministry of Defence letter in connection with implementing NCC as an elective subject. The decision for the implementation had been taken at the JSR&D Conference on July 30, 2015, where it was decided that NCC would be implemented as a subject across all universities.

Sandhu also stated in the letter that all questions in the matter are to be directed to the Chief Administrative Officer at the Defence Ministry. “You are, therefore, requested that you may implement the NCC as an elective subject in your esteemed university for the benefit of the students. Any query in this regard, may be sought from the Joint Secretary (Trg) & CAO, Office of the Joint Secretary (Trg), Chief Administrative Officer, Ministry of Defence, E-Block, Dalhousie Road, New Delhi,” Sandhu said.  The notification was released on November 11, 2016 . –  Courtesy     /       Published on 11/11/2016  : UGC Letter reg.: Implementation of NCC as an elective subject in all Universities

Promote water, sanitation & solid waste as career options, UGC tells universities

ENA India | 28 April 2016 |  ENA Bureau |

New Delhi, Apr 28 (ENA) In adherence to a report submitted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has suggested various measures for universities to undertake to contribute to clean surroundings. One of the recommendations is to start skill development / diploma courses in technical departments with water, sanitation and solid waste as career options, as per an official notification.  Further, universities have been asked to make necessary amendments in the curricula at educational institutions to provide credit to the student’s practical projects on recycling and reusing the biodegradable and dry waste. UGC also wants varsities to develop an institutional framework by involving NSS (National Service Scheme), NCC (National Cadet Corps) or Nehru Yuvak Kendras, eco-clubs to ensure sustained public participation in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Ganga Rejuvenation.

Colleges under their purview should also be issued directions, recommending that they recognise Swachhata Diwas on the first working day of every week. The report prepared for Swachh Bharat Mission and Ganga Rejuvenation is aimed at improving the standards of living, providing adequate infrastructure and reorienting habits and behaviour that contributes to clean surroundings in a growing economy facing wide disparities in income and lifestyles and struggling to meet the requirements of public infrastructure. It is focused on people’s involvement, sustainability and time-bound results. – Courtesy      /      Published on 26/04/2016 UGC Letter reg.: Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Ganga Rejuvenation.

Teach NSS as a subject: UGC

|

The National Service Scheme (NSS) along with National Cadet Corps (NCC) was once the most preferred extra-curricular activities on campus. However, in the recent past, many colleges are reporting a dip in membership. Even repeated drives in a few colleges have failed to get the required number of volunteers. Hence, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has come out with an innovative idea – to introduce NSS as an elective scheme in the undergraduate course. So, now with the new course, students can not only participate in these NSS activities but also end up scoring marks in the exam for the NSS course.

There are a number of interesting subjects that would cover NSS including skill development. According to the syllabus prescribed by NSS, the course would also aim to enhance the employment potential of NSS volunteers or alternatively help them set up small buswiness enterprises. For the purpose, a list of 12 to 15 vocational skills have been drawn up, based on the local conditions and opportunities. Each volunteer will have the option of selecting two skill areas out of the list – one such skill in each semester. The education institution will make arrangements for developing these skills in collaboration with established agencies that possess the necessary expertise in the related vocational skills. Meanwhile, Bangalore University has already taken a lead in introducing this elective. Speaking to Mirror, BU registrar KK Seethamma said they were introducing the same for undergraduate course and students were now showing renewed interest in the extracurricular scheme. With this the twin objective of learning to serve society and score marks had been accepted.- Courtesy  /   Published on 13/08/2015 UGC Letter reg.: Introduction of National Service Scheme (NSS) as an elective subject in Higher Education
