Thiruvananthapuram: For the first time in the country, engineering students in the state will have the opportunity to switch from one branch to another by the end of their second semester. At present, switching of branches is allowed only in IITs. The system will come into effect this academic year. According to the newly-introduced option, students who have completed all the credits prescribed in the first two semesters, and have obtained a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) not lower than 7.5 ( 6.5 for SC/ST students) at the end of the second semester, will be eligible for consideration for a change of branch after the second semester. Students can give only one choice of branch, to which they wish to change over.
“The opportunity for switching from one branch to another is introduced to provide students a second chance to opt for the subject of their interest. It’s unfair that a student wanted to study some other branch but wrongly landed up in a branch due to various reasons”, said APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) vice chancellor Kuncheria P Issac. In the past, the number of engineering colleges and seats were very limited but the situation has now taken a U-turn. Barring a few leading colleges in government and government-aided sector, most engineering colleges in the state are unable to fill all their seats for want of enough students. Kerala Self-financing Engineering College Managements’ Association has come out in favour of the university decision. “Since lots of seats are vacant and college managements arrange facilities for 60 students in each class, the managements have nothing to lose by allowing students to change their branch of study,” said association president K Sasikumar. – Courtesy / KTU Circular :
